PRESS RELEASE - May 21, 2004
MENTIROSA®, THE CLASSIC CUBAN DICE GAME,
EXPERIENCES A REVIVAL AND IS NOW READY FOR A NEW GENERATION OF PLAYERS
MIAMI, FL – May 21, 2004 – Mentirosa®, the classic
Cuban, poker dice game, is being revived with the debut of a limited
edition game set at Cuba Nostalgia 2004. This event, a yearly celebration
of Cuban culture, will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23, 2004,
at the Coconut Grove Convention Center in Miami.
Mentirosa, in Spanish, means "deceitful woman" and as the
name implies, this is a game of deceit. To win, you must mislead your
opponents and manipulate each turn to your benefit. Lie, taunt, tease,
and remember, he who lies last, lies best.
Mentirosa is the brainchild of Miami native Robert Barrueco, son of
Cuban exiles and President of Yuca Productions, a family-owned business
in South Florida.
“I’ve played this game since I can remember, but my family
always played with home made plastic tubes and cheap dice. I soon discovered
that most people played exactly as we did. Because it wasn’t
available for purchase anywhere, it has also remained in relatively small
circles when compared to other Cuban games like dominoes,” says
the 29 year old Cuban American. “With my generation coming of age,
I felt it was time to give Mentirosa new life, and make it available
like never before.”
Yuca Productions will have a booth at Cuba
Nostalgia 2004 where attendees can not only purchase the new sets,
but also try their skills against other players for a chance to win Mentirosa
merchandise. For those new to the game, the beautiful “Mentirosa
Girls” will be available
to provide instruction.
Packaged in an exquisite humidor-style case
and topped with the Mentirosa emblem made of brass and cloisonné glass,
the set captures the essence of colonial era Cuba and has become
the mark of a true Mentirosa aficionado.
Included are six, natural
leather playing tubes, casino-grade Spanish Poker Dice, and instructions
in English and Spanish.
The game of Mentirosa is known in many countries, by many different
names. Similar dice games have been known to be played as early as the
Roman era. It's ancestry comes from a close relative, Cubilete, a typical
game of Spain.
Mentirosa became widely played in Havana and other parts of Cuba during
the 19th and 20th centuries. It is rumored that the game came about when
the American GI's in Guantanamo combined the American game, Liar's Poker,
with the cups and dice used to play Cubilete.
Arriving in South Florida with exiled Cubans in the 1950s, its 21st
century rebirth will give a new generation of players the opportunity
to enjoy this classic game the way it was meant to be.
